Marketing Yourself & Building Your Own Brand

Building Your Brand “All of us need to understand the importance of branding. We are CEOs of our own companies: Me Inc. To be in business today, our most important job is to be head marketer for the brand called You.” Tom Peters As a college professor, each year I speak to my students on the importance of “building your own brand”. Through resume writing and coaching, we speak to our clients about building and marketing one’s brand. How can candidates in the early stages of their career build their own brand and market it? Here are 5 steps to help you market your own brand: Define your messaging and values: Who are you and what is important to you? For example, many of my students are passionate about sustainability. Their messaging is curated around the importance of sustainable products and demonstrate this through listing these values.   Communicate your story: Showcase your story using a portfolio, website, and/or social media platforms. Utilize content that helps others visualize your mission and values and how this was developed.   Be Consistent: As we all have experienced with our favorite restaurants and clothing, consistency is what leads others to come back and want to follow the brand or business.
