Building Your Brand

As a college professor, each year I speak to my students on the importance of “building your own brand”. Through resume writing and coaching, we speak to our clients about building and marketing one’s brand. How can candidates in the early stages of their career build their own brand and market it?

Here are 5 steps to help you market your own brand:

  1. Define your messaging and values: Who are you and what is important to you? For example, many of my students are passionate about sustainability. Their messaging is curated around the importance of sustainable products and demonstrate this through listing these values.


  1. Communicate your story: Showcase your story using a portfolio, website, and/or social media platforms. Utilize content that helps others visualize your mission and values and how this was developed.


  1. Be Consistent: As we all have experienced with our favorite restaurants and clothing, consistency is what leads others to come back and want to follow the brand or business. For my students who design sustainable clothing, if they decide to design clothing using non-sustainable fabrics, this would be going against their brands values. Consistency is key.


  1. Recommendations: Ask others to write a review, referral or recommendation that showcases your “brands” value. This is all part of gaining credibility.


  1. Network: Build relationships with others to share your brand. You may want to attend networking events, meetings, and social media groups to connect with others and share your brand’s story. Build your following, build your reputation!


Make sure to showcase your expertise in a desired area, this way others can see both the value you bring to that area and the knowledge you have developed. Like any other product your goal is to be seen and be wanted.
